For those of you who may not have remembered, today is the anniversary of the assassination of Emiliano Zapata on April 10, 1919.
This has nothing to do with news media, technology or public relations — at least, not that I can tell. Nor does it have anything to do with Marlon Brando, in particular, who gave a stunning performance in the 1952 film Viva Zapata! … which had very little to do with Emiliano Zapata’s character and very much to do John Steinbeck’s script and with Brando’s presence onscreen!
But, I lived in Mexico for a long time and know very well the Zapata iconography and most of the places mentioned in Zapata’s Wikipedia entry, from Anenecuilco to Cuautla and beyond, for what that’s worth.
Eighty eight years after Zapata’s death … “La tierra es de quien la trabaje?” o, “La tierra es de quien te la baje?” You decide …
