I throttled the bird this morning. You know the one … twittering all the time. Like a minah bird that’s gone completely neurotic on you over in the corner. Just won’t shut up. Drivel, usually. Constant stream of it. Poor thing, feels the need to just go on and on about crapola. Thought I’d put Tweety-bird out of his misery.
But, seriously, I just find no value in Twitter. For me, at least, it’s an interruption. I don’t twitter with real friends via the twittersphere, I communicate with them in real life. What about a business use? Can’t find one, except maybe using it to shine the light on blog posts, but even those are loss-leaders in terms of my business. So, what’s the real use.
Just seems way too much like a group of teenagers walking down the street, having ditched sixth period, meandering aimlessly, all trying to come up with witicisms, do digital handstands, playing pranks, showing off for the leader in the pack, wanting to be noticed. Fine for those who are into that. My bird is dead and ’twill tweet no more!
UPDATE/from the ‘on second thought’ department: Despite my inability to find value in Twitter for my particular needs, I realize that given the reality of its being a communication platform that enjoys some popularity, if I’m to remain consistent with my “rule of thumb” for gaining media mindshare then it must have value for communicating certain messages to a certain community:
Concise Message + Defined Community + Precise Platform + Timely Delivery → Media Mindshare
So, I’ll withold final judgment pending greater investigation. Alas, the Twit lies dead in its cage for now … but who knows? Maybe it will rise like the Phoenix from the ashes of my initial condemnation!

Fun post, had a good laugh, but why didn’t you just send me a tweet about this?

I think you’re right – Twitter might be okay for a specific purpose, but for general musings about the now to whoever – who cares?

Thanks, Heather. As mentioned in my subsequent post, Sorting out the … (http://tinyurl.com/32pt4m), I’ve since qualified my misgivings (thought not yet back Twittering), having read a good synopsis of the pros and cons in the debate at Tim Walker’s post at Hoover’s Business Insight Zone, The Twitter Curmudgeon (http://tinyurl.com/3xsvup). I am impressed at Jeremiah Owyang’s thoughtful analysis (http://tinyurl.com/2zg6hj), and after some more exploring I may yet return to Twitter … one of these days … if I ever find the time!!
